Colonel Shaw and the MA 54th
Robert Gould Shaw (1837-1863) commanded the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the U.S. Civil War, the first all-black unit in the history of the U.S. military. Shaw died in battle leading his black troops. The story of the 54th was dramatized in the film Glory.
fleur-de-lis

eve of Interdependence
Notably, Interpendence would fall on November 8. This is a fairly notable historical date, particularly for Germany: In 1923, Hitler staged his failed "Beer Hall Putsch" attempt to overthrow the regional Bavarian government; in 1938, the Reichskristallnacht pogrom began. Some date the abdication of Kaiser Wilhelm II to this date in 1918. Perhaps more significant is that, on November 8, 1966, President Johnson signed into a law an act making it exempt from existing anti-trust laws to join the NFL and AFL.
